Your grinder plays a huge role in coffee quality, and looking after it properly is just as important as cleaning your espresso machine. With a few simple daily habits, you can keep your grinder clean, your beans fresh, and your coffee tasting its best.
Here’s how to care for your grinder at the end of each day.
1) Remove and Store Your Beans
At close, remove all beans from the hopper. Store them in an airtight container and place them in a cupboard overnight. This protects the beans from air and light, helping them stay fresh for the next day’s service.
Removing the beans also allows you to clean the hopper properly.
2) Clean the Hopper Daily
With the hopper empty, remove it from the grinder. Using a warm, damp cloth, wipe the inside and outside of the hopper to remove coffee oils and residue.
The cloth should be damp, not wet. A saturated cloth will smear coffee grounds around rather than clean them effectively. Any light moisture left behind will dry before the next shift.
Don’t forget to wipe the hopper lid as well. Once clean, allow both to dry fully before placing them back on the grinder.

3) Brush Down the Grinder Body
Use a small paintbrush or soft brush to remove loose coffee grounds from the grinder body. This helps you reach into all the small gaps and corners where grounds tend to collect.
A clean grinder station makes the next morning more enjoyable to work in and prevents stale coffee residue from building up.
4) Clean the Grinder Tray
Remove the grinder tray and clean it thoroughly. Use the brush to remove any trapped grounds and wipe it down if needed before replacing it.
5) Make It a Daily Habit
This routine only takes a few minutes, but it prevents residue from building up over time. A clean hopper and grinder mean:
-
fresher beans
-
cleaner workflow
-
better-tasting espresso
-
a more professional coffee station
By caring for your grinder daily, you set yourself up for great coffee from the very first shot the next morning.
